AI Background Removal: How It Works Entirely In Your Browser

Background removal used to mean expensive subscriptions or waiting for server-side processing. Today, a neural network runs entirely inside your browser — private, instant, and free.

Why Background Removal Matters

A clean, isolated subject is the foundation of professional product photography, marketing assets, social media content, and design mockups. Whether you're listing products on an e-commerce platform, building a presentation, or creating social ads, a crisp transparent PNG makes the difference between amateur and polished.

Until recently, achieving this required Photoshop expertise, expensive SaaS subscriptions, or uploading sensitive photos to third-party servers. Modern AI and browser technology have changed all of that.

AI-Powered Precision

Neural network models trained on millions of images detect subject edges with pixel-level accuracy — including hair, fur, and complex shapes.

Absolute Privacy

Processing happens entirely in your browser via WebAssembly. Your images never leave your device — not even for a millisecond.

The Technology: ONNX + WebAssembly

Pixory's background remover uses the ISNet FP16 model, an ONNX (Open Neural Network Exchange) format neural network. ONNX is a universal format that lets AI models run on any platform — including directly in your browser.

Technical Insight

How the AI Pipeline Works

When you drop an image, Pixory loads the ISNet FP16 model (~10 MB, cached after first use) into WebAssembly via the ONNX Runtime. The model runs a semantic segmentation pass, generating a high-resolution alpha matte that precisely separates your subject from the background. All of this happens in a background Web Worker — keeping your UI smooth throughout.

The model runs at FP16 precision (half-float), striking the optimal balance between inference speed and output quality. FP16 models use roughly half the memory of full FP32 models while producing virtually identical results for image segmentation tasks.

6 Output Versions, One Click

Most background removers give you one output: a transparent PNG. Pixory generates six professional variants simultaneously, all derived from a single AI pass:

Transparent PNG

The pure alpha channel output. Perfect for overlaying on any design, website, or presentation.

White Background

Studio-clean white fill. The standard for e-commerce product listings on Amazon, Etsy, and Shopify.

Black Background

Dramatic dark fill for editorial photography, tech product shots, and luxury branding.

Gradient Background

A purple-to-cyan gradient sweep that works beautifully for social media posts and hero sections.

Product Shadow

Simulates a studio drop shadow on a light grey surface — professional and natural-looking.

Custom Color

Pick any hex color with the built-in color picker. Your preview updates live as you choose.

Real-World Use Cases

Background removal is one of the most universally needed image editing tasks. Here are the most common scenarios where Pixory saves you hours of work:

E-commerce Listings

Amazon, eBay, and Shopify require clean white backgrounds. Batch-process your entire catalog in minutes.

Professional Headshots

Replace messy office backgrounds with clean studio looks for LinkedIn profiles and company pages.

Marketing Assets

Extract subjects for social ads, email headers, and banner images without touching Photoshop.

Design & Mockups

Drop isolated products into scene mockups, presentations, and Figma designs effortlessly.

Step-by-Step Guide: Using the Background Remover

1

Upload Your Image

Drag and drop your image directly onto the upload zone, or click to browse your files. Supported formats include PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, and GIF. There are no file size limits — larger images are processed at full resolution.

2

Wait for the AI

On first use, the ONNX model (~10 MB) downloads and is cached in your browser. After that, processing is instant even offline. A live progress bar shows each phase: model loading, background removal, and variant generation.

3

Choose Your Background

Select from the 5 pre-made variants or use the custom color picker to choose any background color. The comparison slider lets you drag to reveal the before/after difference at pixel level.

4

Download Your PNG

Click the Download button to save your chosen variant as a full-resolution PNG. No watermarks, no account required, no hidden costs. Repeat for additional variants if needed.

Privacy Deep Dive

Most online background removers — even the highly-marketed ones — upload your images to their servers. This creates real risks: your images can be stored, scanned, used for AI training, or exposed in data breaches.

Privacy First

Zero Data Leaves Your Device

Pixory is architecturally incapable of seeing your images. The AI model runs inside a browser Web Worker using WebAssembly — a sandboxed execution environment with no network access. Even if we wanted to send your images to a server, the code structure literally prevents it.

This matters especially for sensitive use cases: confidential product prototypes, personal ID photos, private client images, or any situation where you simply don't want a third party seeing your content.

Tips for Best Results

  • High contrast helps: The AI performs best when the subject has good contrast against the background. Avoid images where the subject color matches the background closely.
  • Clean edges on input: If your source image is blurry or low-resolution, the AI will have less information to work with. Use the highest-quality original image available.
  • For hair and fur: The ISNet model handles fine edge details well, but extremely fine hair strands against busy backgrounds may need manual refinement in a design tool.
  • Model caching:After the first use, the model is cached in your browser storage. Keep this in mind if you're on a shared or low-storage device.
  • Batch processing: Process one image, download it, then upload the next. Each run is completely isolated.
